Witness the result of three teen artists – Ben Anderson, Madison Donnelly, and Lori Kim – who created the new mural for the offices of Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Services, a nonprofit organization committed to revitalizing neighborhoods in the city’s northwestern sector. The mural perfectly encapsulates the organization’s mission, which transforms neighborhoods through the extensive renovation and construction of new homes.

The mural (left) was part of an art apprenticeship program directed by Bad Dog Rediscovers America (right), a 10-year-old organization created by Michael Moonbird and Victoria Lyons. Mentors work closely with children on projects in creative writing, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture and digital multimedia. Local artist Ruby Chacon served as mentor for this latest project who said she was “so proud” of the students who personally designed this mural. Creative independence is an essential part of the Bad Dog mission.

The mural can be seen at the Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Services offices at 622 West 500 North.

I was so proud to be at the unveiling of this project which launched the Teen Apprentice Program (TAP) of Bad Dog Rediscovers America. As a Bad Dog parent, I have watched my child blossom as an artist under their tutelage. I am so excited that there is a program like TAP that she can “grow” into; finding mature ways to express herself and explore her relationship with her community. What a wonderful experience to look forward to!

Bravo to Ruby and her apprentices. They’ve done wonderful work!!

I want to add my hearty ‘Bravo’ to these two agencies, Bad dog Rediscovers America and Neighborhood Housing Services, for providing quality services to our city’s deserving children and young adults. And, a heartfelt thanks to the Sponsors of the Teen Aprentice Program who helped make this project and its benefits to teens a reality.

The new mural is a magnificent achievement in children’s art that demonstrates the lasting beauty that comes from commitment, talent, and leadership this collaboration forged. It is also a clear demonstration of our childrens’ potential to achieve when they are given the opportunity to learn and grow assisted by caring teachers.

Hopefully, these young mural artists will be remembered and applauded for their creativity, planning and execution for years to come. Amazing things do result from our community working together for good.

    Congratulations to all involved.
