Among the newest releases on the SLC music radar are:

Hasil Adkins’s “Out to Hunch” – Adkins is the true one-man band; no overdubbing at all, and everything was done in one take. Brought up in rural West Virginia, he spent most of the 50s, 60s, and 70s mashing dirty-filth rockabilly into an old reel-to-reel tape deck. This latest release is an amazing out-of this word rock ‘n’ roll experience.

Bruce Haack’s “Electric Lucifer” – Some call him the king of techno (technology); some call him the pioneer of electronic music. Whatever the name, Haack, one of the most innovative artists in any genre, was sampling sounds and lyrics before there was technology to do such a thing. He’s well known for his pure children records and after hearing late 60s rock he added acid rock to his diverse sound palette. The result was 1970s’ Electric Lucifer, a psychedelic war-opposing song cycle about the struggle between heaven and hell. This is psychedelic rock ON ACID!!

Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias of Peru – Chicha is music created by the culture clash of the 60s when the Indians of the Peruvian Amazon were introduced to Colombian pop music known as Cumbia and American rock ‘n’ roll. When cheap electronic instruments came within reach for the Amazon Indians, they formed dance bands that used the syncopated beat of cumbia. sounding like a laid-back Latin cousin of ska.

Iron & Wine’s “The Shepherd’s Dog” – Familiar to Salt Lake City concertgoers who were lucky enough to catch this band’s appearance at the Gallivan Plaza last month, the group has just released its third album full of lush production sounds far different from the group’s first lo-fi sounds. Come grab this one on CD or vinyl.

Billy Joe Shaver’s “Everybody’s Brother” – Shaver is one of the greatest songwriters country music has produced in the last 50 years. Many country artists have put out gospel albums over the years, but Shaver’s is in a league of its own. Look out for the duets with Tanya Tucker and the late Johnny Cash.
