The artistry of vinyl at Positively 4th Street Music

Once again, tons of new and used LPs and CDs have arrived. There are excellent vinyl LPS of Mark Ronson’s “Version,” the Kashmere Stage Band from the legendary Houston high school, and Peanut Butter Wolf’s “2K8.” Also featured are “music enhancers” crafted by Michael Osten, a local glass artist. Leif the Lucky – who will be performing with the Furs at the Urban Lounge this Friday (Oct. 12) – will be at Positively 4th Street Music earlier that day, doing face painting. This will be his last show until Memphis.
Among the notable releases on the SLC music radar are:
She Wants Revenge’s “This is Forever” – Inspired by Depeche Mode and Joy Division, this moody post-punk ensemble was formed in 2003 by Justin Warfield and Adam “Adam 12” Bravin, a couple of DJs from Los Angeles. In 2006, positive word-of-mouth and airwave exposure propelled the duo into a major recording deal with Geffen which resulted in an eponymous debut release reminiscent of Interpol, Bravery, and early Depeche Mode. Their newest release is just as good, if not better.
DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist’s “Product Placement” – Regular blog readers probably know that these two are probably my favorite DJs. Their turn-of-the-century release of Brainfreeze – an exceptional collaboration of rare funk and soul singles (the 45 mix because the entire set used only 45s) – didn’t leave my tape deck for more than a year. A similar approach followed in 2004 with “Product Placement.” This is a live DJ set used with four turntables and two mixers recorded live in four places around the world, then pieced together in four parts. Mixing 12″ records are hard enough, but mixing 7″ and 3″ records takes some serious skill. Check this limited edition release out – you will not be disappointed.
Now-Again Re: Sounds “Vol.1″ 7-7″ Box Set (Wow!) – Excuse the rare exclamatory approval but loyal followers know that I really enjoy vinyl – especially the 7” variety. This is an amazing set of heavy funk/soul with a little bit of rhymes on top – a perfect gift for any DJ or collector. Egon really knows how to pick ‘em, another classic from Stone’s Throw Records’ sister label, Now-Again. mmmm deee-liciousss!!! (That is Chase’s enthusiastic endorsement – Editor’s Note)

an address and phone number would be nice, that is if you are doing a piece on a music store. You know, so you could get in touch with the store you’re recommending, “music enhancer” head.
the reviews for DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist’s “Product Placement” were underwhelming…but i am curious to hear for myself. Gotta skreemr that up or something.
woah Interpol/Liars, that would be sick. being from nyc i am sadenned that i have yet to see interpol. if only i got in on that earlier on.
