Editor’s Note: Once again The Selective Echo welcomes Chase Loter from Positively 4th Street Music for this week’s take on the eclectic, independent music scene which drives the sophisticated tastes of Salt Lake City listeners, DJs, and musicians.

Halloween is just a few days away but Positively 4th Street Music already is prepped for the upcoming holiday season. And, this chronic last-minute buyer of holiday gifts is changing his tune because I’ve already been handed a list from my special somebody. In addition to a solid collection of used turntables, we also have a great starter kit for aspiring disc jocks: two Numark tt1625 direct drive turntables and a Numark dxmo6 mixer with a built-in effects processor. And … we have Azza’s Halloween party mix Vol. 1, a scary, entertaining local compilation including music by the Wolfs, Starmy, Cavedoll, and Fifi Murmur. And, for Samhain, we have plenty more for only 2 buckerinos … Wow!

Among the featured releases on the SLC music radar:

The Incredible Bongo Band’s “Bongo Rock” – This record is the ultimate template for hip hop music – from the slow hard-hitting drums on “Last Bongo in Belgium to the classic break on “Apache.” This is a must-have for any connoisseur of funk, soul, hip hop, or for anyone who just loves good music. A great piece of music history from 1973.

Dwight Yoakam’s “Dwight Sings Buck Owens” – Who else could honor his idol like Dwight? Coming from Bakersfield just like Buck and Merle Haggard, this tribute, too, comes just as naturally with Yoakam capturing the legend’s essence without consciously imitating the delivery and style of Buck’s musicality. Dwight even has Buck’s backing band “The Buckaroos,” – mostly guitarist Don Rich. The only problem I had with this album is that there’s no “Tiger by the Tail,” one of Buck’s most legendary songs. All in all, this is one album not to be missed. Buck would definitely give a big thumbs up for this one.

Ween’s “La Cucaracha” – Dean and Gene – described by Billboard as a “prodigiously talented and deliriously odd duo, the ultimate cosmic goof of the alternative rock era” – are back!!! Enuff said …

Shooter Jennings’ “The Wolf” – The only son of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter was turned on to music at an early age, moving from Nashville to LA to start his rock band Stargunn. While the band notched a good local reputation, Shooter returned to his country roots after seven years, forming the 357s. Shooter is a must-see live act and this CD is a must-have.
