Ah … the gift of a gentle, mild fall! If you’re looking to dazzle your Thanskgiving dinner guests with bona fide fresh heirloom tomatoes, look no further than the Chad Midgley’s outdoor fresh produce stand in downtown Salt Lake City adjacent to the Avenue’s Bakery on South Temple. The stand will be open Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. or until all produce has been sold

As previously noted in this blog, Chad is a remarkably resourceful farmer who has nearly perfected the art of year-round fresh produce in northern Utah. The gentleman farmer from Bountiful now has two sizable greenhouses at his home which have been able to withstand the effects of morning temperatures in the upper 20s.

Among the bounty before the holiday are 35 bags of fresh basil and a selection of heirloom tomatoes which include Cherokee Purples along with a motley selection of pink and yellow ones. Expecting to see heirloom tomatoes well into December, Chad uses an “old-timer’s trick – a little bit of tomato vine attached to the blushing tomato, picked before a hard frost and cached in a warm crawl space.”

Chad also has protected structures which allows him to offer spinach, rainbow chard, and dandelion greens throughout the season. The pre-Thanksgiving offering ranges wide: Jonah Gold and Fuji apples, chestnuts, potatoes, onions, winter squash, heirloom eggplants, carrots, beets, leeks, fennel, turnips, and celery root.

Chad’s free-range chickens, already documented in this blog for the loving care they receive, have been just as productive with eggs. Last week, Chad sold 56 dozen in just under two hours last week.
