A familiar landmark featured atop this blog in this photo by John-Paul Jespersen, photographer and artist, will take center stage in January and Utah citizens have an opportunity to be part of the long-awaited re-opening of the Utah State Capitol Building.

The historic building has been closed to the public for three and a half years, for renovations that have brought it to earthquake resistance standards, and have made major (and subtle) differences in other ways. It is anticipated that there will be a surge of visitors anxious to see the changes after the rededication ceremonies in January. This will require a small army of volunteers to direct visitors and aid the Capitol docents during the week-long open house, January 5 to 12, 2008.

Volunteers will be able to attend a special dress rehearsal of the rededication ceremony on the evening of January 3, which will include the full performances scheduled for dignitaries on January 4. Following this rehearsal, volunteers will attend a brief training to prepare for the open house week.

Individuals wishing to be part of this historic occasion should sign up early as the spots are expected to fill quickly. This is especially important if friends or family members wish to be assigned to work together. Registration can be completed online here. The website allows registrants to select a time that is best for them and offers more information about the project. Additional information will be provided by e-mail to registered volunteers.

Questions will also be answered by Rick Pehrson and Mike David, co-chairs of the state capitol volunteer task force at 801-538-8697 or rpehrson@utah.gov.

Thanks so much for posting this, my wife and I relocated here in August and we’ve been wondering when the Capitol was slated to reopen. I’ve just signed up to volunteer so hopefully we can be more than just spectators when it happens.
