Lief is back! Stop in and welcome him home. New line of novelty speakers are coming soon. We also have a line of collectibles by artist Jason Siu —so fresh! These are limited number releases so don’t miss out.
Local Pick:
The Deadbeats – Seizure Songs: Released in mid-January, these progressive tracks of hip hop layered over eerie, nearly ambient beats really hit the spot for me. If you have an appreciation for downtempo beats and hip hop at all then you need to check out this CD. They even promote duplication once it’s in your hands—so keep the love flowing and let someone know about it. The Deadbeats played a Slammy Awards show this week at Monk’s.
Fresh Highlights:Marilyn Manson – Eat Me Drink Me: Manson’s latest release from Summer 2007 lacks the predictability of his releases up to now. Post-divorce sentiment creeps in to the lyrics and gives insight into personal thoughts and emotions never before seen on his songs. Still heavy gothic chords and electronic rock ballads … a little less gritty than in the past, a bit more studio polish. Don’t miss his Valentine’s Day performance @ Saltair.
Ford Turrell – Self Titled: He is an extremely talented young folk/acoustic artist. His songs are roots based, haunting and down to earth, and his voice is powerful yet understated. He includes Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Steve Earle among his musical influences but Ford has developed his own style. Listen to him here or here or in our store.
M.I.A. – Kala: Released in 2007, Kala is her second album and was recorded while she traveled overseas. M.I.A. produced most of the tracks with Switch; Blaqstarr, Diplo, and Timbaland contributed as well. This CD is a righteous amalgamation of hip-hop, electro, dancehall, grime, and baile funk — making an impact with DJs and public alike.
Thes One – Lifestyle Marketing: Inspired by the Music That Works records released by pianist and keyboardist Herb Pilhofer in the 1970s, People Under the Stairs producer/MC Thes One set about making an album of beats that maintained the purpose of the original tracks (they were used as advertising jingles) while also adding his own MPC beats to give the songs a completely new — and very contemporary — feel. Because Lifestyle Marketing is more than just a beat album, it’s also an advertisement for the hip-hop generation: something you can dance to or rhyme with, quirky and pulling from the past while still completely grounded in the present, reflecting the current state of the genre and those that propel it forward, who are willing to explore new techniques.
